Does Constipation Prevent One From Urinating?

My 81 yr old father in law has an enlarged prostate and hasn t been able to urinate hardly at all today. He is also constipated and took a stool softener. Could being constipated maybe cause him also not be able to urinate even though he feels the urge? How long before we wait to be really concerned?

Hi,

In case of prostrate enlargement passing the urine would be difficult and it can be the only reason if patient having difficulty in passing the urine and no other reason or reasons are likely, constipation is different thing and it may not cause voiding difficulty, not even the stool softener.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
