Does Alcohol Increase The Glucose Levels?

i eat a very healthy diet, high in veggies and fruit, all whole grains, and little to no beef, mostly fish and a little chicken. I am not overweight, but don't get time to exercise as much as needed. I have been drinking 1-2 drinks per night for about 10 years now. My LDL is 145, i have very high HDL, low tri's, and total cholesterol of 250. My glucose on a recent test was 111. Witht the diet i keep, would the alcohol explain some of the high glucose and LDL? No history of diabetes in family.

Hello there,
So from the description it appears that you have not been diagnosed to have diabetes. Your age is another point that I would have liked to know. However your LDL cholesterol is of concern and definitely not at the right value. Your LDL should be somewhere less than 100. Glucose levels to be normal Fasting should be less than 100 and Post prandial should be less than 140. Do meet a physician to consider initiation of statin therapy for your LDL cholesterol levels and get an OGTT to make sure you do not have diabetes. Your diet seems ok but try to cut down on your alcohol to 1-2 drinks per week. Alcohol in the long run does increase sugars and LDL cholesterol levels.
Take care

Dear sir i can understand your concern
in my opinion the alcohol is the reason for your increased LDL.
the blood sugar is fine its not a problem.
i would like to tell you that alcohol is rich in calories and tend to increase your LDL(bad cholesterol)
each gram of alcohol contains 7 kcal which is almost same as fat.
i would like to suggest you some diet tips
when it comes to diet, its very important to maintain balanced and timely diet schedule.Diet in diabetes should contain 60-65% of carbs. 20% of proteins and 20-15%of fats.
brown rice can be taken in pre diabetes but should be limited to a cup. Most of bread made out of whole wheat can be taken in diabetes.
This brown rice and whole wheat contain the same amount of glucose as normal white rice but the release of glucose will be slow due to presence of fiber in them.
This kind of slow realize will prevent the rapid raise of glucose in your body.
Nuts are very good in diabetes and can be take daily in a quantity of small cup or you can take them not more than 50-75 grams.
This nuts should be a mix of walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts and cashew nuts.
its better to prefer low fat milk than full cream milk.
I would like to give some diet tips to be followed in Pre diabetes
1.Avoid all kinds of refined carbohydrates like sugar
2.Take all kind of fresh veggies kindly restrict use of potato and sweet potato.
3.Daily taking green tea is good for pre diabetes as it contains lots of antioxidants
4.alcohol can be taken in a moderate quantity,Try avoiding wine and beer(better to avoid alcohol fully during gout attacks).Alcohol can be taken 2-3 ounces twice weekly
5. avoid all kinds of carbonated drinks they are not good for your bone health.
6.low fat milk can be consumed about 200ml per day
7.low fat cheese and low fat yogurt can be taken.
8. daily you can take a small cup of almonds, walnuts, pista and peanuts which are good for your good cholesterol.
9.daily take only one fruit, avoid banana and mango ...if you like take only minimal quantity
10.you can take protein,Choosing plant-based protein, such as beans and legumes more.
11.if you are interested try taking egg white alternate days since plant protein alone can not supply all essential amino acids.
12.use olive and sunflower oil for cooking.
13.prefer grill than oil fry.
14.occasionally you can take ice creams and dark chocolate
15.take good amount of green leaf veggies to avoid constipation

16.It is best to avoid beverages sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, such as soft drinks or juice drinks

.
kindly mention height and weight of your wife to advise calories per day.
Hope I was able to help you.
