Discomfort While Eating, Coughing Up Undigested Food. Need To Go To Emergency?
Hi, I was having dinner a few hours ago and while i was swallowing some food, I felt as thought I had a macarone that was going down my wind pipe. I can't be certain that it did but I felt some discomfort which seemed to subside after a couple minutes. I don't have any aggressive symtoms, however from time to time I'll cought up some phlegm with bits that seem as if though they are half digested food and they have very bad smell to them. Should I seek help?
Hi, Thanks for posting your query. With the available described symptoms, there appears to be possibility of esophageal (food pipe) obstruction. Feeling of choking sensation along with phlegm suggests the diagnosis. With esophageal obstruction, food may enter in trachea and may cause cough with phlegm production. You should consult with internal medicine specialist/ gastroenterologist and should go for thorough check up. You should go for endoscopy on urgent basis to rule out possibility of esophageal obstruction. Treatment depends on exact diagnosis. You should take liquid diet for enhancing swallowing. Take care, Dr. Mayank Bhargava
