Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Discomfort on urination (called dysuria) is most commonly due to infection. If this has been ruled out by investigations then the other potential causes must be ruled out.

The other possible causes for dysuria in a male are: (1) BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy or enlargement of the prostate)
(2) stones- the presence of stones in the renal tract can result in dysuria
(3)urethral stricture - this is blockage of the urethra which is the passage from the bladder through which urine passes
(4)side effect of medications
(5) cancer- cancer of the urinary tract can also lead to this symptom

Your boyfriend's doctor may suggest additional investigations to determine if any of these is possibly contributing to his symptoms.
This may include ultrasound and cystoscopy.

I hope this helps
