Child Has Fever. Prescribed Tylenol With Motrin. Temperature Is Too Low Now. Suggestions?

My 9 month old son (20lbs) had a fever of 100.3 for nearly 24 hours, we saw a md this morning who suggested alternating tylenol with motrin every 4 hours. When I cam home from work at 4 his tempurature had fallen and I gave him a dose of Motrin at 5pm. It is now 9 pm and his temperature was 96.4 and 97.1 in the last half hour . Now I'm worried it's too low.

Hi,

As long as your child is active and alert do not worry about the low temperature. You could wrap him up if you feel he is too cold.

Antipyretics like Tylenol need to repeated 4-6 hrly and Motrin 6-8 hrly. However you could also give these medication only when there is fever i.e SOS.These medication act at the temperature control Centre in the brain and get the temperature down.So at present keep the baby well hydrated and give medicine when fever appears again not necessarily every 4 hrs.

Bye
Take care.

Welcome to healthcaremagic.

I hope he is alert and awake, playful and taking his feeding well. If this is true, don't worry. If he is having rigors or hand/feet feel very cold, you can cover him with a blanket

If his fever is getting better, I would just give these medications as and when needed. Tylenol can be given maximum 4 times a day and Motrin maximum 3 times a day.

You can keep record of his temperature and when it is above 99 degrees, you can first give Tylenol. Wait for about 45 min-1 hour for it to work and if fever doesn't settle, give Motrin.

Things should start improving in next couple of days time.

All the best
