Child Bitten By Dog, Scratch Increasing In Size, Crusty. Cleaning With Alcohol, Applying Ointment. Dog Not Vaccinated?

A week ago my 10 yr old son got a bite from a chihuahua dog. First it was like a scratch but with seven lines. I have been cleaning it with alcohol and putting a+d ointment thinking, it was just a scratch. Now its round the size of a quarter and crusty. I'm concerned that dog was not vaccinated like the owner said it was.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.

It seems the wound is healing, but if there is any discharge, redness, and fever, suggestive of secondary bacterial infection oral antibiotics may be required.

Coming to vaccination, if you don't know about the vaccination status of the dog, it is best to start anti rabies vaccination for 5 dose on 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days as it is safe and will give protection.

After 10 days of bite if the dog is healthy, you can discontinue shots with your doctor advise.

Consult the doctor immediately for the advise and vaccination.

Hope I have answered your query.

Regards.
