Chest Discomfort, Breathlessness, Burping, Sore Throat, Throat Irritation. Taken Antacid. Want Complete Cure

Hello doctor, I have a query regarding hiatal hernia . My husband was having slight discomfort in the chest, shorness of breath, burps, soar throat and throat irritation 2 months back. The doctor, after giving some antacid , suggested for an endoscopy . The result showed hiatal hernia. Now the other symptoms have gone gradually, after avoiding spicy food, but the throat irritation and frequent throat clearing is still there. Could you please guide us how we can cure this completly. Thanks, Sowmya

Hi, many thanks for the query!
You need to get operated for the hiatal hernia as early as possible if fit, if symptoms are unbearable, with GERD.
(you haven't mentioned age).
Persistent acid reflux (more in large & paraesophageal types) may lead to strictur formation or even Barrett's esophagus & this may progress into malignancy (cancer). This information is not to make you afraid but to prevent the complications.
Elevate the head end of your bed and avoid lying down directly after meals until definitive treatment is rendered.
If the condition has been brought on by stress, stress reduction techniques may be prescribed, or if overweight, weight reduction may be indicated.
Till then continue antacids, anti-emetics with your doctor's opinion.
Avoid spicy food, oily food, late night meals.
Wish you a good health.
Take care.
Regards.
