Can I Drink Alcohol While Taking Medication For Severe Anxiety?

I was put on Zoloft 3 weeks ago for severe anxiety from a traumatic experience after surgery. I always have had anxiety though. She started my dose at 50 mg. and it has worked somewhat. She increased it to twice a day now. My question is this. Can I drink alcohol while taking this drug? The paperwork says I can. I am a social drinker. I am a 66 year old female.

Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hey there,
Both Zoloft and alcohol affect similar chemicals in the brain. In normal individuals, it has not been shown to increase the mental and motor skill impairments caused by alcohol but has not been studied extensively in individuals with anxiety. Hence the use of Zoloft and alcohol together is not advisable.

Hope this helps,
