Stress and anxiety known to cause irritable bowel syndrome. Regarding your query it's possible both ways. What I suggest is get an upper GI endoscopy done and also to assess the anxiety to check with the DASS score if you're thinking of stress induced. Continue therapeutic trial with proton pump inhibitors, avoid sweets, fried food, caffeine and sleeping right after food intake. Also sleeping with propped up position will decrease the reflux.
