Can History Of GERD Cause Palpitation?

Hello,

I am a 19 year old african american male that has recently been out on Atenolol for High BP and anxiety. I am also overweight and have been working on losing pounds. Just a month ago I was admitted to the hospital for chest pain and had a series of test run on my heart in the telemetry unit (Multiple EKG's, Chest X-ray, Chest CT Scan, Nuclear Stress Test, and a Chest ultrasound). The good news is that all of my results came back normal and my primary care physician believes the pain was caused by GERD and a possible ulcer. Today I had to return to the ER because of palpitations and elevated heart rate after lunch. My resting heart rate while sitting was around 90-100 and reached 125 BPM when walking. For some odd reason my heart rate was normal when lying down.

During my stay, I was given a few GI cocktails to remove some of the spasms in my stomach and Atenolol 25 MG for my BP. I have a history of slight anxiety due to my GERD and it really seems like the Atenolol is working miracles for me at this point. I am still having slight palpitations when lying down but my resting heart rate is normal 55-60 BPM (I have seen it at low as 51 on occasion when I'm extremely relaxed). I was told that I should check my pulse in the morning and if it is below 60 BPM I should skip the dosage. What do I do if my blood pressure is high but my pulse is low? If I skip a dose due to low pulse, would it be okay to take the pill if my heart starts racing?

I certainly enjoy my heart rate being on the lower side than upwards of 100+. My body feels more relaxed today than ever and I feel as if my anxiety is the lowest it has been since my diagnosis of GERD. Is it a possibility that the palpitations I am experiencing could be caused by my GERD? The only reason I ask this is because after the gambit of tests ran on my heart, everything came back normal.

Hello, thanks for posting a question on our site.
I have gone through all the detailed information you provided. GERD does not cause palpitations. Palpitations are caused by heart diseases, anxiety, thyroid problems etc. In your case, it is caused by anxiety. To help reduce episodes of your palpitations, I usually advise my patients to follow these guidelines.
1. Avoid too much stress, sleep 6-7 hours in a day.
2. Eat a healthy diet that consists of green veggies, fish, whole grains.
3. Do exercises like Yoga, 3 times a week at minimum.
4. Avoid smoking, drinking or caffeine.
Hopefully, you will be fine with these adjustments.
