Can CT Scan Sometimes Miss A Hernia?

Two years ago my doctor told me I have a right inguinal hernia. I never had problems with it until recently and am seeing a surgeon tomorrow. However, I had a abdominal/pelvic CT scan a week ago and there was no indication of a hernia on the scan. Can CT scans sometimes miss a hernia?

Hello,

Yes CT scan can sometimes miss a hernia due to variety of reasons:
• Not well developed defect
• Overlying momentum/bowels shadowing
• Inadequate bowel preparations before CT as loaded colon
• Inappropriate focus over that region
• Observer dependent factors
• Low resolution machine not able to pick up certain tissue details
• Reporting problems
• Exchange of report with another patient (yes possible in well known hospitals of the world) and others

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
