Are Hot Flushes, Disturbed Sleep , Chest Heaviness And Irritability Are The Side Effects Of Orofer XT Prescribed For Low Iron And HB?

Hi Doctor! My Hb count is 6.8 & Serrum Ferritin count is 2.6. My doc has prescribed orofer XT...twice daily. I sometimes get hot flushes, disturbed sleep, slight chest pain/heaviness, irritability & restlessness. Have been on the medicine for the last 7-8 days...is this alright? What could be other side-effects of this medicine?

HI. Welcome to HCM. orofer XT contians elemental iron 100 mg and folic acid 1.1 mg. It is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (low Hb). The side effects that u have are very common among iron supplement users, but these side effects will subside with usage and it may 1 or 2 weeks to settle down. Other side effects are nausea, vomiting, skin rash, sometimes broncho spasm. If u experience severe symptoms of side effects and if its intolerable then its better to consult your treating doctor and he may change the medications. . Regards.
