Are Hormones Required After Radioactive Iodine Treatment For Hyperthyroidism?
I had a radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism @ 14 years ago and every follow up testing done showed normal levels. Have never taken any kind of hormone. Due to not having insurance have not had the testing done for quite a while as it is very expensive. Is it possible that after all this time I need hormones?
Hello, Thanks for posting in HCM. Usually after radioactive therapy patients do not need any therapy. But in some cases it is seen that patients treated for hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine patient goes in hypothyroidism and then needs treatment for hypo with thyroxine supplements at low dose depending upon the thyroid profile study. So yes, it will be advisable to do atleast TSH study to see for thyroid profile. If it is high which suggests hypothyroidism you may need thyroxine tabs to keep the hormonal balance. I hope i have answered your query well. Thank you
