Are Delayed Periods And Bleeding After Intercourse Normal?

Hello, I'm 19 years-old and up to a month a go was a virgin.I took the morning-after pill three times in two months after I had unprotected sex, and since then I still haven't got my period.I know I'm not pregnant because I had a test done. Also, I've been experiencing bleeding after sex, it happened two times this week and I'm extremely concerned.Could it be because of the morning after pill?

Hello, and i hope I can help you today.

The morning after pill is made to prevent pregnancy using a large burst of hormones in a short period of time. It is not designed to be used repeatedly, as it becomes less effective and can produce irregular bleeding and spotting. It can also delay your normal period as well.

I would recommend you consider using a daily contraceptive pill. Birth control pills are up to 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy when taken every day. I also would recommend you see a GYN doctor for a checkup exam along with the prescription. You should be screened for Chlamydia as it is a very common STD in adolescents and you are at risk if you are having unprotected sex.

So in summary, your spotting and delayed period is likely due to your taking the morning-after pill multiple times in one cycle. You should see a GYN doctor for a checkup after beginning sexual activity, and they may prescribe an appropriate birth control for you.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
