Pediatrician Dr. Jasbir S Chugh's  Response
Dear Erwin

Liver and spleen enlargement in an 8 moth old can be due to multiple reasons. It may or may not be related to the current fever. If your child is anemic i..e has low Hemoglobin then it is related to a blood disorder. The other cause could be,liver diseases; infections like Malaria, Sepsis, urinary infection, viral fevers etc. You need to get a complete blood test including blood film and MP, blood and urine cultures done. Your Pediatrician will examine the child and order the required investigations. Please do not try to self treat or have treatment from quacks.

My wife had a liver transplant 9 years ago and her liver function are doing good to this day. She was admitted into the hospital 2 days ago with acute broncitis because she could not get well. She is better now and her lungs are now clear but it took a massive dose of antibiotics. Here is the latest problem: the scan showed an enlarged spleen which is pushing against one her lungs. She can t lay flat in the bed because she has trouble breathing. She does okay in a recliner. She is 56 years old. The doctors are discussing what her options are. Question: should she have the spleen removed or just deal with it as is?

Our youngest daughter, who is now forty yrs. old, unmarried and an attorney, has had colon problems for quite a few years and has been diagnosed with a bad immune deficiency system. She has monthly infusions which are mailed to her and which she gives to herself. Most recently she has been told that her spleen is filled with blood and must be taken out lest it bring about other major problems. Can you please give us your thoughts on this type of situation? We will greatly appreciate it and thank you greatly for your information and concern for our daughter. Jean and Tom White Lancaster, S. C.

I AM A 37 YEAR OLD FEMALE, MOTHER OF 11 CHILDREN. The youngest is 12 months old. I have always suffered from headaches and about 5 months ago my neurologists place me on Amatriptelene. 2 -10mg tablets at night before bed. It knocked out the headaches, however within 2 weeks I began to gain a lot of weight. At about 6 months postpartum i weighed 160. However in a matter of months, I now weigh 198 lbs. In addition I started feeling very bloated and having pain in the middle of my upper abdomen. As a result my doctor ordered an ultrasound. I received the results this morning....An enlarged spleen and liver. My family history is one that includes my father who suffers from polycythemia vera which has progressed to leukemia. He has an enlarged spleen and liver. My 49 year old brother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer last year that spread to both the liver and lungs. Need less to say, I m a bit concerned. I was under the impression that PV was not hereditary but now I wonder. Also as of this morning I m feeling burning during urination. But all labs showed up no infection anywhere. Do you have any advice as I proceed on this journey?

I have been having symptoms that no one can diagnose for about two years. Assuming no rare disease, and no microbes or parisites, i believe 99.99 of all of my symptoms are related to my vagus nerve and digestive system as a whole! Now with that being said about on oct 14th i went out for some beers to watch a football game. I hardly ever drink though!!!!That night and next day i had all over body itching and have had it ever since!!About two days earlier my throat was hurting and i remember two days before that my teacher told me she was sick!!I have had the sore throat ever since then(about seven weeks), then out of nowhere on about NOV 8th my joints and muscles and bones have become very tender and ache, in particular my hands and wrists and knees and hips.!!!I have a high GGT liver enzyme with all other liver numbers normal, Low vitamin D in the past and now i found out that my Autonuclear test was positive when i asked to be tested for lupus!!!They did other autoimmune tests and they were normal!!!Never had any throat cultures done!!My doctor thinks that my throat hurts because of heartburn at night!!I am very concerned about the joint pain and the sore throat and NON stop itching that is NOW waking me up at night as of last night!!PLEASE HELP as the Veterans ADMIN sucks!!!!!
