What Us The Cause And Treatment For Chronic Heartburn?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Feb 2015
Question: I have had chronic heartburn for several a month. I've tried many over the counter antacids to no avail. I recently went to the doctors where they prescribed a different antacid and took blood tests. I have also experienced a full feeling over the past few weeks, haven't lost any weight and have slight pain right below my breastbone and over the the right side of my abdomen. My aspartate amino trans level was at 39 and my alanine level is at 70..both higher than the normal range. What are the concerns I should have and the next steps from the doctor?

What should the next step be from my doctor? I had the same test in 2012 and the alanine level was slightly elevated at 40...

Brief Answer:
Discuss an upper GI endoscopy and ultrasound exam

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for your query.
You have an acid peptic disease. If you have not had an upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy, it is advisable to have one. It will show the reason for your heart burn and abdominal pain. It can also be used to test whether you have a bacterial infection by the organism H. Pylori.
Another investigation that would be useful is an ultrasound examination to check on the health of your liver.
You could discuss these with your doctor.
Take care,
Dr Noble Zachariah
