Posted on Thu, 15 Oct 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,
My daughter's pediatrician has prescribed antibiotics Mox for 7 days as her fever kept recurring for more 5 days. Our family doctor however mentioned that Mox course duration should be 5 days. Just wanted to verify with you what is the right dose? 5 days or 7 days. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Duration depends on the indication

Detailed Answer:
Hi...The duration of antibiotic depends on the indication for which it is being given.

If it is just for upper respiratory infection then it is for 7 days
If it is for otitis media or middle era infection or streptococcal pharyngitis then the duration of the treatment is for 10 days.

Never it is 5 days.

I suggest you follow the prescription of your pediatrician and continue it for total 7 days.

Regards - Dr. Sumanth
