50 mg is not useful

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, you haven't mentioned the name of drug you been taking. I am assuming 50 mg is an antibiotic, if anything else, do get back. Presuming this is 50mg of some antibiotic, my opinion is as follows:

1. 50 mg dose in your present condition - assuming your kidney and liver are functioning well is safe. However, it is totally unnecessary as you have no UTI and already on cranberry juice.
2. Secondly, taking it for such a long time would have induced resistance to the particular drug.
3. Dry cough is usually allergic or pharyngitis or secondary to cold. As you have no cold, you can do salt water gargling thrice daily along with warm water and additionally antihistamines to reduce irritation, which is causing dry cough. Lozenges can be used also.

If there is any liver or renal damage, 50mg dose can turn toxic. Better to stop it.

Hope it helps.

I thought I was onto the microdantin website. It is not for infection but as a prophylactic to stop UTI. I do not like to take antibiotic for long periods but my urologist does not seem to worry. I started a couple of years back when I had numerous UTIs in a row. I have to use catheters 3 x per day. to empty bladder.

Brief Answer:
Necessary to continue due to daily invasive procedure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking again.

Nitrofurantoin 50-100 mg is routinely prescribed on a prophylactic basis, and that is the reason, urologist does not seem to worry.
As you are using catheters daily, the possibility of inducing infection is highly present, therefore antibiotic cover for this invasive procedure is compulsory.

Regarding the medication, do get a liver function test every 6 months, and watch for any breathlessness or tingling and numbness anywhere. Additionally, take Vit B supplements, particularly B12 supplements.

Dry cough is not related to the allergic cause secondary to present medication, it is possibly related to environmental allergy. As earlier suggested, you can warm salt water gargling along with antihistamines like cetrizine. Avoid exposure to dust and check if you are snoring. Have a good sleep and use lozenges as necessary.

Hope it helps.
