What Does This Ultrasound Report Of Pelvic Area Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: Hello
I have recently had an ultrasound after having left side pelvic pain for a week. The ultrasound report says my left ovary is bigger than the right and is 10.l volume. It also says there is a complex 15x11x12mm lesion with mixed echogenicity with internal and external vascularity.

The report opinion suggests perhaps a collasping follicle? And it suggest a repeat ultrasound in 6 weeks.

Should I be worried about this? What does the vascularity internal and external mean?

Brief Answer:
Vascularity suggests a live mass or follicle.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The report suggests that you have a small complex cyst in the left ovary that is of the size of a follicle. The vascularity in the cyst suggests that it is an actively growing mass. Since it is small in size it is not worrisome. We can monitor the cyst for 6 weeks and get a repeat ultrasound scan done to find the progress. In case the cyst is actively growing in size then it needs to be removed surgically.
You can get your serum CA-125 levels evaluated to find out if it related to any ovarian malignancy.

Thank you for your reply.

I did have a cA125 test done about 2-3 weeks ago which was negative. However the cyst wasn't present on the ultrasound at that point. The doctor just did the test because I have had pain on and off for a while.

Just some further info. I am 39 years old and no family history of these types of cancers or masses. I have had one successful pregnancy that went to 24.5 weeks gestation.

I just have two other questions;

If the CA125 test was negative a few weeks ago, do I need to do another one?

What does it mean with it say complex lesion? Are all collasped follicles complex?

Kind regards

Brief Answer:
Collapsing follicle can mimic a vascular mass.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If your CA-125 levels were normal 3 weeks ago then there is no need to go for a repeat test.
The collapsing follicle can give the appearance of a complex cyst with internal echoes, hemorrhage and septations. It is also a vascular structure. It is best to wait for a few weeks and find out.
Hope my answer is helpful.
