Brief Answer
Might be suffering from Eustachian Tube Blockage due to Enlarged Adenoids

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.

I have gone through your health query and can understand your concern.

I have gone through the prescription which you have attached.

It says that your child was suffering from cold and has a history of mouth breathing and snoring. For the cause of mouth breathing and snoring, the doctor is suspecting Enlarged Adenoids for which he has advised an X ray-to look for enlarged Adenoids.

Adenoids are lymphoid tissues like Tonsil. They are found in the back of nose. They may get enlarged in case of allergy or infection. The enlarged Adenoids will cause Blockage of Eustachian Tube.

Eustachian tube is a tube which connects the ear with the nose and is responsible for equalization of middle ear pressure with the outer atmospheric pressure. In case of this tube blockage,it will lead to negative middle ear pressure which may lead to fluid collection in the middle ear .It is also called Glue ear.It may lead to hypersensitivity to sounds as experienced by your child.

The Doctor has also advised the hearing test-to find out whether there is any hearing loss and whether there is any fluid collection in the ear due to Eustachian tube blockage.

If Adenoids are found enlarged causing Eustachian tube blockage, then your child may be given a short course of Nasal Decongestant like Oxymetazoline to reduce the size of Adenoids.Even a course of Nasal Steroids may also help in reducing the size of Adenoids. But if there is no improvement or if the Adenoids are sufficiently large, then Surgery to remove the Adenoids might be needed.

Hope this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up questions.Take care.

Brief Answer:
Cause might be due to viral infection in the inner ear.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting the reports.

The hearing test report is normal suggesting that your son is able to hear normally both the sides.

X ray shows mild adenoid enlargement. The cause might be cold infection which he suffered from.It may have lead to mild blockage in the Eustachian tube leading to negative middle ear pressure. This might be one of the factors causing hypersensitivity to sounds.
Taking the medicine for cold as advised by your Doctor will help.
He may also take Nasal Decongestant drops like Oxymetazoline(0.05%) if he is suffering from nasal Blockage.

Another possibility of cause might be viral infection of the inner ear-as he suffered from cold(which would probably due to a viral infection). In such a condition, hypersensitivity to sounds will generally subside as the inflammation in the inner ear subsides.

Another cause for this condition might be due to abnormal responses of muscles of middle ear that protects the inner ear from loud sounds.

Hearing sensitivity has no corrective surgical or medicinal intervention.
However, sound therapy is an option if the hearing sensitivity (called Hyperacusis)lasts longer .This therapy helps retrain the auditory processing centre of the brain to handle and accept normal everyday sounds.

In sound therapy,a combination of techniques including an auditory desensitisation programme, Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and cognitive behavioural therapy are helpful in a case of Hyperacusis. This therapy is given by an Audiologist.

At present, avoid listening to loud sounds.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.

Hi Mam,

Appreciate your efforts in explaining me in such a detailed way and thanks for that.

My kid only suffers when he hears an extremely loud sound like drums or big orchestra ,he can watch movies in theater only in live drums or music orchestra kinds he suffers so I hope he is not so sensitive to sounds or let me know if you think otherwise.

So below may not apply to my kid or you suspect below can also be a reason for his suffering .

Brief Answer:
Abnormal Middle ear muscle response to very loud sounds can be a cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for your follow-up question.

Looking at your information, your child is sensitive only to very loud sounds.Abnormal Middle ear muscle response to very loud sounds can be a cause.

Also there might be another two possibilities which I mentioned earlier in the answer.
In that case there are high chances of recovery once the inflammation in the inner ear settles.

If still the hearing sensitivity persists, then as answered above he may be given sound therapy-which will gradually adapt his hearing system to loud sounds.
As such there is no surgery or medicines for this condition.

Avoid loud sounds as much as possible as in few cases it may aggravate this condition.

Hope this answers your question.Take care.
