Question: An MRI show a herniated disc between l2 & L3. I have had a fluoroscope guided shot that relieved the sciatica, but the numbness is still down my inner left thigh past my knee, and much weakness in the left leg. Right toes are now becoming numb occasionally, but most numbness dissipates in the evening after sleep. I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon Monday, and want to be informed of all options.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Conservative/surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
You have disc prolapse at L2-3 and are having numbness and pain inner thigh and weakness in (L) leg even after fluoroscopic shot.
There are two ways to treat :
1. Conservative: Medicines like pain killers ,muscle relaxants , gabapentin ,Physiotherapy and life style modifications. In majority of cases ,say 90% , they work and relief from symptoms is achieved. The period of conservative treatment depends on response , usually 6 weeks is good for assessment.
2. Surgical : Surgery is done only if you have very severe /Acute problem Like involvement of bowel and bladder functions, or there is no adequate relief from conservative treatment. Surgery can be open of endoscopic.
I hope I have cleared the treatment protocol. Please feel free to ask any further questions,

If surgery is done, what is a conservative recovery time. I am a pilot, and sit for hours at a time. Hong long out of the left seat due to clotting or pain management?
