What Does The Following CT Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Thu, 5 Mar 2015
Question: My docter ordered a ct for various pain I have in my mid back and stomach area. The scan came back normal except for small amount of free fluid in the cul de sac and a cystic structure that has a very thickened wall rim on the left side. The impression states the small amount of free fluid in the cul de sac and the thick wall cystic area seen within the area of the left area measuring about 2 cm. and states to follow up. My gi didn't answer many questions except saying that I need to get it checked out. I'm worried because I've had cysts before but never seen to be reevaluated.

Brief Answer:
Need to know type of cyst

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I understand your concerns about cyst.

The cyst which causes back pain or abdominal pain is generally endometriotic (also called chocolate) cyst.

This is collection of blood in the ovary over a long time. This collection leads to pain. Therefore it needs to be evaluated as to whether this is endometriosis.

Please see a gynecologist and ask for ultrasound scan of pelvis by transvaginal ultrasound scan. This is one method to differentiate type of cyst.

Let me know if you need any more clarifications.

Hi. I've had a few surgeries for endo and cyst but all on my right side. My concern is cancer. Ive scheduled an ultra sound but reading is making me nervous due to my ct scan saying very thickend rim on left side.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I understand you are afraid of cancer. But this does not appear to be cancer.

This is a cyst without any septation or contents. This is probably endometriosis or simple cyst.

Dont worry about cancer.
