What Does Nausea After Ileostomy Procedure Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Sep 2016
Question: I just had an ileostomy performed as part of surgery related to colon cancer. I got nauseated and threw up yesterday afternoon and didn't know why. Today I am getting sick again and I am getting very little in the bag. Will a laxative or stool softener help to break the stoppage up?

Brief Answer:
The cause of Nausea should be known.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
The cause of Nausea has to be known.Whether it is due to medicine or food.It should be avoided.
Initially, I prescribe Proton pump inhibitor like Rabeprazole along with Domperidone to my patients with similar complaints.
Laxative or stool softeners will not help as they work on large bowel.
The stool will be in liquid state in Ileum. So,take plenty of liquids.Eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
Take frequent small feeds.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query. If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards
