What Does My Ultrasound Scan Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: I had an ultrasound on the soft tissue of my neck which revealed a prominent, 2.2 cm x .7 cm submandibular lymph node with normal homogeneous overall morphology. This node has been sore. The GP characterized as firm. I have no other symptoms of illness. What are these symptoms most indicative of and what can I expect with my ENT follow up?

Any family history of thyroid cancer /or any lymphoma?
Update any information of the previous medical reports/doctors advise notes.

Thank you for your reply.

I noticed the lump approximately 6 weeks ago. It was sore at times, but I decided to wait before having it checked, knowing that it could just be a minor illness, though I was not feeling sick. I saw my GP after I noticed a little facial edema on the same side as the lymph node. This seems to have dissipiated now though. The lymph node was not originally accompanied by any illness or dental issues, but I have had a minor sore throat for about a week now.

I have no history of thyroid cancer or lymphoma, however, my father died from lung cancer. My sister is a breast cancer survivor. I am an ex-smoker. Quit 18 months ago after about 20 years on/off smoking.

In the past year I have had no major illnesses. I may have had a cold here and there.

Otherwise, I am in excellent health. BP 95/65; pulse 64. total cholesterol a little high, but HDL at 69. Blood sugar normal. BMI just under 25. Active 60 min a day/6 days a week, which includes running about 15 miles a week.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Acute on chronic Tonsillitis, with 2 sub-mandibular lymphadenitis

Detailed Answer:
Provisional Impression-Submandibular Lymphadenitis of Unknown Origin/Under Investigation.

Final Impression(After the last updates)
-Acute on chronic Tonsillitis,
with 2-Soar submandibular lymphadenitis, due to last weeks cold attack

Hi,Thanks for the updates.
I reviewed your query in the context of your last updates.

Here are replies for your 2 of the queries as follows-

Q-1-What are these symptoms most indicative of ?
In my opinion, you seem to have acute on chronic Tonsillitis, which is strongly supported by your 18/20 yrs of smoking history.

The sore submandibular nodes-suggest that you had it due to the
recent cold attacks. It appears that it is the soreness of this lymph node which increased your worry in the background of Cancer history with your sister(Breast Cancer survivor),and your father -lung cancer.

The Firm feel of the node-as opined by your GP,confirms it is of chronic duration ,but which you noticed it since 6 wks back incidantly.A soft node could have been there if it occured after the last soar throat attack,1 week back.

Q-2-and what can I expect with my ENT follow up?
-You need not worry about the Cancer reports from the ENT Surgeon's next follow up.
Your USG has already confirmed the homogenous nature of the 2 submandibular Lymphnodes.
As you are worried about these 2 lumps to be ?Cancer or not?I would suggest you to ask for FNAC biopsy with Histo-Pathological Report, which would confirm the absence of Cancer in your 2 submandibular nodes.
ENT Surgeon may advise EXCISION Biopsy, for which you can have the option of the FNAC Biopsy.
So ENT visit would be mostly Uneventful,in this background and Ent Surgeon's follow up visit may declare your 2 neck nodes as NORMAL.

Suggestion-
Don't worry about the 2 neck submandibular nodes.
Your next ENT Surgeon's Follow Up visit is going to be non-eventful,with declaration of your 2 neck nodes as NORMAL.

Hope this reply would help you to plan your treatment with your ENT surgeon's next Follow Up Visit.

Hope this reply would satisfy you from worrisome query and anxiety caused with it for last 2 months or so.

The ENT used a scope to examine my throat more closely. He did not diagnose any tonsillitis, but did order a biopsy.
