What Does My Kidney Function Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Feb 2016
Question: Hi
I recently visited a lung specialist as I had cough and cold for a long time , a series of tests were done which also includes liver and kidney function test. In the liver function test i see the values of SGOT and SGPT are increased in 2016.
Also after that I saw my past reports of Nov 2013 just now and I noticed that my SGOT was at the borderline that time but at the normal range.

I am worried , what does it mean and what do I need to do about. Do I have liver damage.

My current physical parameters :
Age: 31 , weight , 103 kgs , height 6'2.
My medical history:
Hashimoto Post Hypothyroid , taking 75 Thyroxin, since 6 yrs
Constipation since 16 years , no fix medicine sometimes i take looz syrup , Fiber supplement and recently for sometime I had been taking homeopathic remedy.

I am attaching combined test reports from 2016 to 2013 to past.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
There is nothing to be worried here.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thanks for sharing the reports.

I have seen the attached investigation reports here and can understand your concern about SGPT and SGOT.

Your both SGOT (42) and SGPT (56) will be considered as a clinically normal despite they are marginally elevated (depending upon the lab variations) here and it would have no clinical significance in an otherwise healthy individual.

I would not be personally worried about it, since SGPT and SGOT are highly sensitive liver function tests and they might get easily elevated even with fatty meal or even mild alcohol intake.

The other causes could be use of pain killers (NSAIDs),use of various types of non herbal health supplements, obesity and heavy exercises (gym work-outs) or some autoimmune disease.

So,there is nothing to be worried here about liver damage. They are NOT indicative of any liver damage.

However, you can repeat the test for SGPT/SGOT after 4 weeks on fasting blood sample and most probably it will come within normal limits.

Meanwhile, you may take tab.Udilive 300 mg twice daily which is a bile acid, a substance naturally produced by the body and does not have any side effects.

Your IgE level is 166 which could be due cold or cough (allergic) and there is no need to worry about it.

Rest of other blood and liver function tests reports are completely normal.

Continue to take your thyroid medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Hope this helps and let me know your more questions.

Dear Doctor

Thanks for your reply , can you explain me the purpose of Tab.Udilive 300 MG.

I got a bit concerned as in the past too in 2013 November the SGOT was borderline but within normal range. Reports are attached in the same trail.

I had been taking homeopathic medicine for constipation which i have stopped and shifted to Looz syrup few days back.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Udilive may be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.

As I already explained that Udilive (Ursodesoxycholic Acid) is a bile acid, a substance naturally produced by the body which helps to decrease the liver transaminases (enzymes) and decreases the production of cholesterol.

However,it is not mandatory to take in your case since you have marginally elevated SGOT/SGPT which are clinically normal and they can come back to normal by avoiding fatty/oily foods.

I have also seen your blood reports of 2013 where SGOT is borderline but I would again advise you NOT to worry regarding it since it is highly sensitive liver function test and get easily elevated even under normal circumstances. Means if there is some underlying liver issue (suppose jaundice here) then, both these sensitive tests go much higher (like above 1000 to 5000) and came back to normal with appropriate treatment.

You may continue to take your thyroid medications and looz syrup for constipation.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dr.Sandip Kabra
