What Does Depakote Level And Topamax Level Of Blood Test Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 May 2014
Question: My son was taking 250mg of Depakote for 2 weeks for his migraines (caused by brain seizures) and they became much worse. We stopped the medicine, went to the neurologist and they did blood work. When his blood test came back his depakote level was 4 and his topamax was 7. Is this normal? The neurologist will no longer treat him and I think it is because of the blood work.

Brief Answer: Upload the blood test report Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your query. Blood levels of Depakote being around 50-100 µg/ml is considered useful and therapeutic. I would like to see the report of the blood estimation of both Depakote and Topamax. Why did you have to stop the medications, kindly explain. What substitute medication is he on now ? Does he still have seizures, if yes how frequent ? Waiting for your response,

I do not have the blood test report with me but I did look at it this morning and his Depakote blood level was 4.0 and his Topamax was 7.4. We stopped the Depakote because he went from having 2-3 migraine-type headaches a week to having one every day for 2 weeks. The only thing that changed was the addition of the Depakote. He was taking Gabapentin before we took him off (gradually) so that he could have an EEG without the interference of his medication. This is when they diagnosed that it was brain seizures (Epilepsy) causing his headaches. He is taking the Gabapentin again at this time because the medicine they wanted to give him had the potential for worse side effects. The neurologist was supposed to get back to us within the week to determine the next step but instead he dropped us as his patient and said there was nothing more he could do.

Brief Answer: Take a second opinion Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for writing back. Let him continue Gabapentin. I agree it could be dangerous to take Depakote as there are practically numerous side effects of the same. I suggest you to consult another neurologist and take a second opinion. Kindly provide the details of the area you are residing in. I shall suggest a better neurologist amongst. Waiting for your response,
