What Do Strong Heartbeats And Visible Pulses In The Neck Indicate?

Question: My husband has a fairlystrong, visible pulse on both sides of his neck, also his heartbeat seems strong if I'm laying on his chest, not fast, just strong. He is 34, and unfortunately a smoker. He has cut back quite a bit. He was recently seen for another issue by an internist and BP was normal, he states the MD listened to his chest and made no comment about his pulse/heart sounds. I am concerned, should I be concerned for a cardiac/carotid artery issue?

Brief Answer: NOT to be worried about. Detailed Answer: Hi. I can understand the concern. At the age of 34 , smoking may not have as much of an adverse effect as you think. This is good that the Internist and the MD have no comment - this means a straightforward thing - your husband has no cardiac or chest problems. Yes the strong heartbeats and the visible pulses in the neck can very well be ignored. These are seen in many many people as a normal occurrence. Every individual has his / her own characteristics .

Thank you for your answer Dr Chandrakant, I wasn't in the room when he was seen by the MD who examined him but my husband states he listened to his heart, if there was an issue could it be caught by listening alone? i.e, murmur, valve issue?

Brief Answer: Stethoscope is still the best Detailed Answer: Yes, sure. The Stethoscope is still the best instruments which can detect some diseases better than any medicines including the ones you suspected so. Secondly , if the MD would have thought so , He would have definitely told in an indirect or most probably direct way, would have called , would have asked for further tests. If nothing like that, do not worry and be happy that you Hubby has a great heart which can be listened even bare-early. Is he skinny or well built- muscular or obese?
