Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: I recently had a bladder infection and was on 7 days of Cipro at 500mg 2x per day. this morning I passed what appears to be sand clumps very small when I peed, I took them out of the toilet and they are grainy like sand and fall apart when touch. no pain. Are these stones? Should I change my diet in some way.Should add had some flank pain night before, and had blood work recently that showed all kidney function normal levels so wondering what sand particles could be Doc is out this week on vacation.

Brief Answer:
Stone fragments- most probably---------------------------------------------

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to the forum.
These are most probably gravels in urine - graveluria, especially because it was associated with flank pain.
Diet change in the form of plenty of oral fluids and reduced red meat should help to prevent stones in the long run.
Yearly checkup in the form of urine analysis and ultrasound scan are needed as followup.
Sincerely,

So am curious if UTI was caused by graveluria and is graveluria the same as a stone I have never heard of it before. I still have questions please answer asap I have never heard of graveluria is that the same as kidney stones? I am not able to see my Dr. till next week.

I have more questions regarding this my Dr. did a complete blood work up about a week ago when I was in mid cycle of my 7 day round of cipro. All the kidney function test came back completely normal. Wouldn't a stone throw some of those numbers off. Also please address graveluria I have never heard of it and is that the same as a kidney stone. Should I cut back on dairy someone told me too much calcium can cause these. Please address all concerns.

Brief Answer:
Graveluria refers to presence of sand like grains in urine

Detailed Answer:
Apologies for the late reply.

Graveluria refers to presence of sand like grains in the urine. It may be related to renal stones.

I would not name graveluria as the cause of urinary tract infection, though a relation can exist. You will need evaluation by your urologist cum gynecologist to find the cause of recurrent urinary tract infection.

Lastly, renal stones occasionally affects kidney functions. Renal functions are affected when the stone is sufficiently large enough to cause obstruction and hydronephrosis. Therefore a normal kidney function test doesn’t rule out kidney stone.

Hope this answered all your questions. Let me know if you need clarifications.
