What Do Red Bumps On Upper Lip Of A Child Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: We noticed my 7yr old daughter developed a few red bumps on the outside of her upper lip when we picked her up from school. The next day we noticed a cluster of small red pinprick sized bumps on the upper corner of her mouth. She doesn't have a fever and isn't complaining about itchiness or pain. Any ideas on what this can be?

Brief Answer:
Cheilitis or Zoster

Detailed Answer:
Hi...this could either be a cheilitis or Zoster or a trivial viral infection. The surest way of telling is only by seeing it. Usually skin conditions are best diagnosed after examination. I suggest you to upload an image of the lesions in this website. I also have a few questions which you can answer.

1. Did she get chickenpox anytime till now?
2. Was she vaccinated for chickenpox?
3. Does she have any painful ulcers inside mouth or on tongue?

Brief Answer:
Cheilitis or angular stomatitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have seen the image..at this stage it looks like cheilitis or angular stomatitis to me. It doesn't look like Zoster or Herpes. This could be caused because of a trivial viral illness or vitamin deficiency too. It is a self limiting or spontaneously resolving problem. At the most you can supplement her with some multivitamins.

A word of caution is that, if the lesions are enlarging into papules or if they are becoming pus filled... You need to consult your pediatrician immediately because they are evolving into something else or becoming secondarily infected.
