What Do My Lab Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: I had some lab work done and it stated the following:
Mullerian hormone inhibitor     - 5.4 ng/mL
The range that they gave as being normal was 0.9 - 9.5 ng/mL but when I look online it says that normal is 1.0 and anything above is not normal. Now i'm confused.

Brief Answer:
Higher than normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
Yes your test is a little higher than expected in normal women.
The normal levels are between 1.5-4 and anything above and below are abnormal.
High levels as seen in your case is suggestive of polycystic ovary disease and is not a much problematic condition so can be managed easily in usual cases.
Can you please tell me the reason for which it was done so that i can advise you better.

Me and my husband are trying to have a baby and we are going through tests for the fertility doctor. I did have the 3rd on cycle ultrasound which didn't say they saw anything. They counted 7 follicles in each ovary.

Other tests:
DHEAS (ug/dL)     167 mcg/dL

Would they have seen if I had PCOS if they did the ultrasound?

Brief Answer:
Day 2-3 scan is more important

Detailed Answer:
I basically practice as infertility consultant and see such cases regularly.
AMH (antimullerian hormone) has a signal value and is co related with day 2-3 scan.
Day 2 scan if shows more than 12 follicles in one ovary then it is quite conclusive if polycystic nature of the ovary.
Polycystic ovary is an isolated finding and may not be the reason of infertility even if present and can range from mild to severe.
So all your tests as a whole have more prognostic value as compared to a single one.
But seeing this all In glad to tell you that there is problem due to raised AMH in your case at least.
