Posted on Mon, 28 Jul 2014
Question: 48 hrs ago I found one whitish clear bump/blister on the labia majora or outer lip of my vagina. Now there are 3-4. The first one seems to be healing. I've used hydrogen peroxide which seems to boil infection out. Does this sound like herpes or some other STD???

Brief Answer:
Can be herpes if painful.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
From the symptoms that you have described, these bumps sound like small irritated hair follicles causing folliculitis or clogged pores. Folliculitis starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing or blockage of the follicle.
In case, the bumps turn painful or causes open sores, Herpes should be ruled out. Till then wear cotton clothes and try not to irritate the bumps.
As far as the treatment is concerned, apply warm compresses and keep the area clean and apply some topical antiseptics after using hydrogen peroxide. Also avoid wearing tight fitting clothes and wear loose-fitting cotton clothing and underwear. Wash the area well with an antibacterial soap or mild soap like dove. Avoid any kind of cosmetics. Topical antibiotics such as Neosporin are also useful.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your reply. I'm itching some but not much and it's not painful. I shave regularly but have never had this issue.

Could shaving the area have contributed to Folliculitis?

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes shaving can cause crushing of hair follicles causing an infection. If there is no pain or fever then you can continue with the treatment advised above.

I realize tests will need to be completed to confirm but would my ob-gyn or dermatologist, though a physical exam, have good idea as to whether there is a possiblity of herpes?
