What Causes Water Retention In Feet And Legs?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Jul 2014
Question: Hello,
I have water retention in both of my feet and legs. My doctor has prescribed Triamt/hctz 37.5-25 to take daily. The pill definitely removes the water in my feet and calves, but I get severe foot and leg cramps. I am taking a potassium supplement, calcium 1000mg and Lansoprazole 30mg. Because the cramps are so bad and hard to make stop, I only take the Triamt/hctz occasionally. I am overweight, have had a blood clot and multiple PE's. I have good blood pressure. I have sleep apnea and have had many surgeries such as full hysterectomy, neck and back disc removal/fusions, Morton's neuroma, meniscus surgery and lymphnoid removals in neck and back on head. I have a small mass on liver near gallbladder, but has been diagnosed as a vessels mass not a tumor. I am frustrated and don't know what is worse water retention or cramps. My doctor doesn't have any answers for me. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Both are bad situations that can be managed...

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

Now, if I was your caring doctor would go deeper to find out WHAT IS CAUSING SWELLING IN FEET :
- heart problems: get cardiac tests, ECG, cardiac echo, stress test
- liver issues: measure liver function test (transaminases, bilirubin)
- kidney problems: infection, stones, failure (get it checked through kidney function test and urine analysis)
- local blood vessels problems: get Doppler ultrasound of blood vessels

Once the cause is properly treated, you won't have problems with water retention, neither with cramps.

With regards to getting to know which is worse, I want to say that it all depends on the main cause. Both of them are bad situations, but can be managed if the cause is known.
