What Causes Vaginal Itching After Taking Amoxicillin?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: Hello. I had an ear infection two weeks ago and was prescribed amoxicillin. Several days after I started taking it, I got itch, vaginal white discharge and burning. I went to see a doctor and she gave me one dose diflican for yeast. Two days after taking it (and I was still on the antibiotics), I got a brownish discharge. There is a very mild itching and burning during urination, but less than before. I was tested for stds two months ago (urine test) and am in a monogamous relationship. I am also taking birth control pills and today was my last before the placebo pills.
Could it be chlamydia? I have read that it can cause all of those symptoms.

Brief Answer:
It needs physical examination and diagnosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to healthcare magic.
I understand your concern.
In my opinion the presence of altered vaginal discharge along with itching, urinary problems suggest vaginal infection due to chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gonorrheaal infection etc.
But definite examination needs physical examination along with necessary investigations to confirm the diagnosis.
Physical examination involves speculum examination of vagina and the nature of discharge.
Complete urine examination along with urine culture and sensitivity detects the organism causing urinary infection.
Also the vaginal discharge should be subjected to tests like culture and sensitivity for the detection of gonorrhea and trichomoniasis.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is the gold
standard for the diagnosis of chlamydia.
Trichomoniasis can be detected by examination of discharge under microscope.
So I suggest you to consult doctor for further work up.
Nothing to worry. It will subside with apt treatment.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha

Thank you for the response. I will get tested asap.
I wonder though whether the alternating symptoms might due to initial yeast infection caused by the antibiotics, then the effect of the diflican combined with the birth control pills? The itching subsided after the diflican pill and the burning feels more like due to the irritated reddish skin outside then to an urinary problem.
Also, the last encounter (unprotected sex with my partner) when I could have gotten it was more then two months ago. Could I get symptoms months later?

Brief Answer:
definite diagnosis is important

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,I got your query.
Usually intake of antibiotics, oral pill usage all might predispose to yeast infection.
In the yeast infection itching and discharge subside mostly after the treatment.
As the itching is still persistent along with urinary problems other infections might be ruled out.
Some sexually transmitted infections (STD) mimic the yeast infection.
So it is always better to come to definite diagnosis.
Because once the cause is known it can be treated.
Any infection can be successfully treated with antibiotics.
The incubation period (IP)is the time taken for development of symptoms after contacting the infection.
It varies for each infection but roughly between 5-30 days.
IP for chlamydia is 2 days to 2 weeks.
So it might not be possible to develop after 2 months.
Avoid intercourse till the infection is treated.
It is good to ask your partner for any similar symptoms .Because combined treatment of both partners confer good results.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha
