What Causes Itching And Redness Of Skin In Vulva?

I recently had what I thought was a yeast infection. I treated with mono stat one day, this past Sunday. The discharge has left but the itching has not. When I look at my vulva in a mirror I see a small black dot and lots of red irritated skin. Does this sound like cancer, infection, or an STD?

OB & GYN Specialist 's  Response
Hello,There are many causes of itching and redness, like dermatitis, hormonal changes, yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, psoriasis, lichen plans. Menopause are common. Irritation causes pain, itching or redness and swelling in vaginal area, it can affect any part of vulva, including labia, clitoris, urethra, and vaginal opening. This can be due to folliculitis, due to shaving, waxing, or due to razor. For treatment, leave the area as such for some days to prevent further irritation. Wear loose clothes, cold water compresses, warm compress and apply Hydrocorticosone, and antibiotic Neosporin to prevent infection. Remove irritants like detergents and avoid douching, latex condoms, take oral antihistamine tablet like Benadryl.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sunita Kothari, OB & GYN Specialist
