What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Having I Pill?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,

I would like to know something regarding using I-pill for the 1st time for my girlfriend. My girlfriend normally has a 2 day periods, with a bit heavy flow on the 2nd day. This is the 1st time that we had unprotected sex on the 2nd day of her period late night. Then once again on the 3rd day early morning. She consumed I-pill in at night on the 3rd day of her periods, that is within 20 hours of our intercourse. Now its almost 9 days of consuming i-pill. But she got a period of a bit heavy flow today early morning. We are a little concerned about it. As she just had her regular period cycle from Sept 26 t Sept 28. We had unprotected sex on Sept 27, late night. What does it means to have another period today? What effect it will have on her health. I am really concerned. Is it normal to have the period today? Will it effect her regular period cycle for next few months.. Please respond...

Brief Answer:
It is a side effect of I-pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to us about it.

It is a side effect of I-pill called withdrawal bleeding. It occurs after 4-5 days of consumption of I-pill.

It is a normal phenomenon, this bleeding resolve in a few days.

Her next period will come within a month, but sometimes it may come early or it may delay for a few days.

So, do not worry about it.

Hope I have resolved your query if you have further questions I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck.

Thank you for your prompt response.

Could you please let me know what is the significance of this withdrawal bleeding phenomenon? Will it really affect her future period cycle? I hope her future periods will not be irregular or erratic with excessive bleeding and abdominal pain?
Now that this bleeding has happened, could you please let me know that there is no chance of pregnancy so that we could be relieved?
She is suffering from pain in hands and feet, and slightly feeling feverish. Is this normal now? Will it be normal on her next period? Will her period cycle change from her normal one? Will there be any more bleeding and pain in coming 2 days, how long this pain will prevail?
Please advice....

Brief Answer:
Withdrawal bleeding is a side effect of I-pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Nice to hear from you all again.

I can definitely understand your concern.

Withdrawal bleeding is a side effect of I-pill due to the high level of progesterone in it.

If she had withdrawal bleeding, and so it does not mean that she will not get pregnant, it is only a side effect of the drug (there is no relation of bleeding in pregnancy).

Fever and pain in hand and feet can be due to another reason also, you should consult your treating physician for fever.

This bleeding will end in a few days and pain will be subsiding in a few days.

As such drug will not affect her next period but it may sometimes delay or come early.( as such it will not cause more pain and excessive bleeding in her next menses)

Hope it is useful, feel free to discuss more.

If you want to close the discussion kindly accept my answer and write a review.

Good luck.

Hi Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you once again fro your response.

I will see a doctor for the fever. I was concerned if it was due to the I-pill.

However just wanted to have one more info. How can I know that she will not be pregnant or there is any chance for pregnancy. Is there no other way than to wait for her next period? Or is there a way we can have that answer?

I am really sorry for writing back again, but I am really concerned about the same. We are dead sure that this has been the 1st time and will be last time to get indulged in this act without protection. The whole idea of i-pill was to avoid pregnancy and hence she has to face all this problem.

Hope you can understand my problem and will advice me accordingly.

Thanks once again.

Brief Answer:
You have to wait for her next cycle.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Please do not hesitate in asking your queries, I can understand your worry.

It can be just a coincidence that she has a fever after taking I-pill, otherwise it will not cause fever (it can raise body temperature due to high levels of hormone in it).

So please consult your treating physician for the same.

You have to wait for the next cycle till there is no method to rule out whether she is pregnant or not.

You should not worry about it because she had I-Pill within 20 hrs. After unprotected sex, so I-pill is 96% effective in her example. (so chances of pregnancy are very very less in her case)

Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more questions.

Good luck.
