Posted on Tue, 23 May 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus. For years I had a problem with an ache in my upper back. I'm bloated and I can't get any relief. At night when I'm sleeping it seems to go away but during the day the upper back ache comes back with eating and activity.

Hello,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
I am a Gastroenterooogist and would be answering your query.
Barrett's esophagus does not have any specific symptoms, although patients with Barrett's esophagus may have symptoms related to GERD.
An associating of constant pain can be an earlist sign of adenocarcinoma also.
Hence first suggestion is to get a biopsy done to rule out the possibility.
Second pssibility is that both events are unrelated to each other.
Upper and middle back pain may be caused by Overuse, muscle strain, or injury to the muscles, ligaments, and discs that support your spine. Pressure on the spinal nervesspinal nerves from certain problems, such as a herniated disc. So an x ray spine AP and Lateral should ve done initially.

Suggestions-
X ray and Biopsy.

Follow up with reports.

A biopsy was done. When I press on my stomach the pain near my right shoulder blade increase. Somehow it is related to my digestion. Pancreas, gallbladder was checked.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
As you say biopsy had already been done this means that symptoms are somehow related to GERD and indigestion.
Start taking a antacid twice daily with half cup of water before food.
Proton pump inhibitor like Nexium are better then Omeprazole in controling symptoms associated with GERD. I would suggest you to switch to Nexium 40 mg twice daily. It will provide you with symptomatic relief in bloating also.
Start taking a OTC probiotic like VSL#3 it will improve your overall digestion.

Avoid all juices(Rich in citric acid) like orange lemon etc.
Don't smoke or drink.
You can take apple cider vinegar(good for GERD patients).
Drink two glasses of cold milk daily. It is alkaline in nature and neutralizes acid.
Eat lots of Yoghurt and food rich in probiotics.
Limit your fibers intake to 20-25 grams per day(Excessive fibers causes increase in bloating).
Avoid aerated beverages.

Stark taking the medicines as adviced and see if pain responds to it.
In case if pain does not respond then it can be muscular also, As pain related to GERD usually responds to Antacids and PPI's.

Thanks.
