What Causes Swelling Throughout The Body While On Diuretic?
Question: I am a 62 yo male that has been to the clinic due to no insurance. He checked my bloodwork is fin. I am not on any medication except for the diuretic the dr prescribed. My only symptom seems to be swelling of the entire body. My blood presser is fine but this has been going on for 3 weeks and I cannot lay down to sleep because it hurts to breath
an ekg was done and it came back normal.
How imperative is the Echocardiogram? Is this condition serious? If so how serious? The Dr. I saw put me on Lasix 40mg twice daily. Should I see an improvement within days or more like weeks?

Brief Answer:
You need to have an Echocardiogram of your heart.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome to HCM: Please note that the symptoms you describe as similar to a patient suffering from Congestive Heart Failure.
I would bet that you need more of this diuretic, I am not sure what dose you are on, and is it Lasix (furosemide).
EKG would not really diagnose CHF.
I hope this helps. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask any other questions.

Brief Answer:
Echo is imperative to accureatly diagnose CHF
Detailed Answer:
The Lasix will only work if it is at the right dose, and at times one needs IV Lasix and some people need a Lasix drip running all the times, this depends on how bad the symptoms are and your physical exam.
You should feel better by 24-48hours if it is working though, you should at the very least be feeling better, not getting worse. At the same time it's highly dependent on how good your your kidney functions are.
Echo also helps classify the CHF you may have. There are different stages of CHF .
