i am 46yrs old female, last night for the first time I was sleepwalking. Last week or so my ankle and feet have been swallen. been taking my water pills and elevating my feet. my left side is swallen from the calf down while my right side is barely swallen. Any suggestions on the cause? Even with following my doctors instructions, it is NOT decreasing in being swallen. I did have a stroke like 8 years ago and tests have shown a difference between my left and right side; right side has been weaker. Let me know what the cause could be and what will my doctor do since water pills and elevating an icing hasn t helped at all.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The swelling in the ankle and feet is likely to be due to a cardiac or renal cause. You need to have a detailed evaluation to find out the cause.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

Is hydrochlorot and hydrochlorothiazide the same drug? If so, why aren't they labeled the same? I have been taking hctz 12.5mg daily for over 5 years and recently switched doctors. I requested a refill on my hctz 12.5mg and had it filled at a different pharmacy. I was given hydrochlorot 12.5mg to take and they are not as effective as a diuretic as hctz 12.5. Why is this? My pharmacist thinks I'm ridiculous for feeling this way.

doctor1 MD

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
You are taking this diuretic for more than 5 year.
Hydrochlorat (also known as Hydrochlorothiazide, or abbreviated as HCTZ) is a diuretic that is used to lower high blood pressure.
HCTZ causes your body to get rid of excess salt and water. (this increases the amount of urine...

doctor1 MD

Dear friend, welcome to HCM.
what is her BP?
controlled well? how long is she on these meds?
is arkamine a new addition?
arkamine can cause drowsiness (it is not an anti depressant!), so also low sodium (especially on diuretics).
I see these as prominent causes.
else many differentials.....

my mother is 87 yrs old, obese with high blood pressure. two weeks ago her legs started to swell. She is on water pills, but her doctor gave her a stronger water pill, this morning her left leg is twice the size of her right leg. I called her doctor and he told me to increase her water pills. My mother is not active at all, she sleeps most of the day and will not walk. she only walks to her bed and to the bathroom. She was like this before her legs started to swell. She refuses to do anything for herself. Should I take her to the hospital?

doctor1 MD

Hi,

The thing that alarms me the most is that the size of her left leg is twice of the right leg. This does not happen in hypertension. In hypertension, the size of the legs will be somewhat the same.

Possibilities of single leg swelling are:

insect bites
thrombophlebitis
filariasis
rarely acute...

I have been treated for high blood pressure for years. My cardiologist prescribed BP medication along with a diuretic. About a month ago my internist took me off the diuretic. My ankles began to swell and I thought it was another bout of gout. When I went to see my internist, she found my BP to be 200/90! Could taking me off the diuretic have caused this? She put me back on it 5 days ago and today my BP was still 170/100.

doctor1 MD

Hi there.

Thank you for posting your query.

I have read and understood your query.

There could be more than one reason causing your swollen ankles.

The withdrawal of the diuretic may cause fluid to accumulate and cause swelling around the ankles which could mean you have an existing kidney...

Does it reduce the pulse and produce insomnia ? Is it a diuretic ?

doctor1 MD

Hi.
Welcome to healthcaremagic forum.
Yes, Amlopress AT25 decreases the pulse rate but does not produce insomnia. Rather it has a calming effect on the body and reduces anxiety. No, it is not a diuretic.

Age 50, had Hysterectomy 2004.Everytime I fly in plane and now I rode in a car for 5 hours to go on a cruise, my lower legs ankles and feet were swollen, my lower legs and ankles and feet were swollen pretty bad, by morning after sleeping the swelling was gone, by the night time they repeated being swollen. I was recently prescribed a water pill due to swelling in my legs and feet . I began taking it and within 3 days I lost 11 pounds (I am 5 5 and around 190 pounds). The doctor called yesterday and told me to stop taking the diuretic immediately because prior to taking them they had done blood work and my potassium levels were low and that the medication would make the levels even lower. My question is how can I tell if it is too low. My heart feels like it is beating out of my chest but my pulse is at 65(normally around 75), my left foot and left hand are going numb, and I have had really bad muscle cramps . Is this related to the potassium or is it something else?

I am 57 yo postmenopausal. I ve never really had a weight problem. I have gained approx. 35 lbs in the last 6 months--the past 2 months it s been 10lb a month for 2 months...mainly in my abdomen. Besides the fact that most of my tops/shirts no longer fit me and I hate my appearance. This whole body changing shape(abd growth) has me miserable ...I am concerned that this could be symptomatic of something more serious maybe a malignancy or hormone problem. Let me back up and tell you a little medical hx. chronic pancreatitis, also had some fatty infiltration in my liver. (no, i m not a drinker) No recent flare ups of the CP. Recent annual Abd ultrasound and abd CT ok. Also I am on 3 different diuretics a day, so I m guessing not fluid retention
