Brief answer....given below Detailed answer... Hello, Thanks for the query. I can understand the problem being faced by your father. It is very common to get these digestive problems as you age and the most common reason in the old age is constipation. This constipation can be caused by various reasons like... ...less intake of water because of fear of going to toilet again and again. ....your gastrointestinal muscles get weak and sluggish resulting in less propulsion action of intestines. This results in slow movement of food through the intestine which results in more absorption of water and hence constipation. ...use of medications of blood pressure like calcium channel blockers, use of diuretics, use of pain killers resulting in acidity. ....inactivity of body. ...problems like diverticulosis.polyps etc you can overcome this by doing following.. ...regular exercises for at least 30 minutes a day. ....drinking plenty of water. ...taking more of fruits, vegetables, whole grains etc. ....you can take psyllium husk at bed time. ....taking pain killers in lowest dose or avoiding them. just keep the constipation away and,i hope, you would be rid of your problems. If above mentioned remedial measures don't bring any relief, then consult your doctor for investigations to find the cause. I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query. Best of luck Thanks

Hello, As far as weakness is concerned, the cause for it should be ascertained. This weakness could be due to high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, lack of B complex vitamins or VIT D,anaemia etc.For this you should consult your doctor for examination and possible investigations. Till you consult your doctor, you may start taking some multivitamin on daily basis. As far as bloating and gas is concerned, you can start a proton pump inhibitor like PANTOPROZOLE 40 mg once a day in morning,on empty stomach,45 minutes before your first meal. Take it for 2-3 weeks. Thanks

Hello, This topic in essentiality is a very confusing topic as to which fruit is good for constipation and gastric problem. In general person must have fibre in the diet for having smooth passage of stool. Fiber are of two types.Soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibres are the ones which are very good for health besides removing constipation. These help in lowering of cholesterol of body. But these soluble Fiber result in production of gas because of their ability to get broken in the intestine.Soluble Fiber is found in apples, oranges, pears, strawberries, nuts etc. Insoluble fibres don't produce gas because they don't get broken inside intestines and are passed as such. Examples are cabbage, onion, tomato, carrots, grapes, raisins, skins of fruits etc. Ideally one should have mix of both type of fibres, Along with intake of Fiber, one should do regular exercises for 40 minutes and take plenty of water. Avoid dugs like pain killers and antidepressants since they cause constipation. As far as packaged juices nd fresh juices are concerned, fresh home made juice is the best because, packaged juice becomes nutritively depleted because of processing and pasteurisation. I would urge you to read about the various types of foods which provide fibres.Sufficient and detailed material is available at so many Internet sites. Thanks.

As my father use to smoke now rarely but he was a chain smoker (Hukka) more than 40years before going to Angioplasty. What will you advice him in this regard? He feels smoking gives the relief in gastric problem, is it true or a myth? pl explain...

Hello, Smoking has its ill effect on entire body. Whenever the person smokes ,the chemicals in smoke like nicotine and carbon monoxide damage the cardiovascular system. Nicotine results in increase in blood pressure, heart rate etc in short as well as longterm. Smoking also make blood vessels and cells sticky which allow cholesterol to deposit inside the vessels. This in turn can increase the blood pressure and clot formations. It is myth that smoking helps in digestion. In fact  it damages the digestive system and contributes towards heart burn, peptic ulcer, crohn's disease, gall bladder stones etc.It also damages the liver. Thanks
