What Causes Soreness And Pain While Chewing And Canker Sores Under Tongue?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: My 22 yr old daughter's mouth is extremely sore and its painful to chew or eat. She's a very healthy eater, so I don't think it's "what's going in". There are several bumps and canker sores under the tongue, several on the left side, the roof of her mouth is raw, and throat... can barely swallow (no obvious mucus nor infection visible on back of throat). Over 3-4 days, I 've had her try oragel topically to numb the pain, rinsing with warm salt water, and/or chloraseptic spray to try and numb...all to no avail. "Mom" is running out of ideas and what to do next. She's miserable and barely eating.

Brief Answer:
Here are few things to be done .

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have read your query and understand your daughter's pain and discomfort. I shall suggest few measures that might help her and heal ulcers:
1. Encourage her to continue and maintain proper oral hygiene .
2. Avoid frizzy drink or irritants like hot drinks or spicy stuff .
3. If the current numbing agents have not been helpful, she can try ointment containing lignocaine and choline salicylate on the ulcers 3 to 4 times a day. Check with her chemist.
4. She can start medicine containing vitamin B complex which are available over the counter. Metronidazole which is a prescription medicine can be of additional help; but it isn't available over the counter.
5. She can also start analgesics such as tylenol for added benefits.

Generally ulcers such as those are due to benign cause - stressors, nutritional deficiency and so on. And those heal in one week to 10 days. However if it doesn't heal or become more severe, then I will recommend she visits a local oral surgeon to rule out infective conditions.

At this point of time, it doesn't seem like a problem to be worried about. Try these tips before consulting the doctor.

Hope I have answered your query .
If you have further query I will be happy to help .
