What Causes Sharp Pain In Buttocks And Groin Area?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Oct 2014
Question: I am a runner, (marathon, ultra) female, 53 years old. Last year I experienced a sharp pain in my buttocks close to my groin area. I cut back my running and completed some chiropractic work over the past 11 months. They treated a couple of herniated disk and I continue to get bi weekly adjustments. However, I still have the pain but with running. I now have pain when sitting in a car or sitting too long in general. Also, as a runner, I also do triathlons (Ironman distances). In the past couple of months I have experience numbness in my groin while on my bike and recently I have experienced groin numbness while sitting and while lying in bed on my side where my legs are on top of each other and tend to put pressure in the groin area. Would this be a piriformis issue?? or ...frankly I worry about symptoms of diabetes.

Brief Answer:
Nerve compression.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome to health care magic. I am Dr. Ganesh.

1.The most possible case in this case is lumbar-sacral region nerve compression or spinal chord compression.

2.There is a disc between the vertebral bodies helps as a shock absorber effect, the disc contains maximum percentage of water, due to degenerative changes when the water content / hydration is lost the disc slips / bulges / some times tears.

3.This can happens as age related issue or excessive usage / weight bearing cases. And gives the symptoms similar to what you are experiencing.

4.In this case you have to do some back exercises - that is the initial treatment of choice, followed by physiotherapy - finally operative / interventional. The diagnostic tool in this case is x-ray lumbar spine for a over view and best investigation of choice is MRI spine.

5.Follow the link for back exercise that might help.

Try for at least 1 week time and if there is no response visit your GP and get investigated and treated accordingly.Good luck.
