What Causes Severe Strep Throat Despite Taking Antibiotics?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 May 2016
Question: They did a strep throat test about 3 days ago. They also gave me a shot and antibiotics for gonorrhea and chlamydia cause I asked for it.

My throat has been like this since Sunday. I have little pain.

I've also had severe acne the last 15 years and have been on antibiotics for it. I finally went off them last year since I got an auto immune disease and would like to get my body healthier.

What is wrong with my throat?

How can I make it better?

Brief Answer:
Inflammation of the throat as following

Detailed Answer:
Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history and the photo you provided carefully and understood your concern.

Your throat seems to be inflammed and infected. Possible past viral infection complicated with strep throat (if tested positive) or other throat infection.

As you've been using antibiotics, oral Candida is to rule out through oral swab culture.

Keep good oral hygiene, use oral antiseptic, continue antibiotics as prescribed based on sensitivity testing and see how it goes.

Wish fast recovery!

I got tested for strep throat and it was negative. I have goo oral hygiene. What could it be? Do you think it's an std?
How do I get rid of a viral infection of the throat? I also got a shot and antibiotics for chlamydia and gonorrhea. Would this get rid the yeast infection and viral infection?

I've also had acid reflux in the past, would this cause my teeth to be yellowish and throat red and tongue white?

Thanks so much!!!

Brief Answer:
Following answers to your questions

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
STD should be excluded by proper testing. I do not think it's STD. To me, it's viral infection of throat.
Candida infection is also another possibility taking into account your personal history of using antibiotics for long term.
Throat swab culture for Candida can confirm/exclude it.

I think you did not receive my last email. Anyway, I will repeat again as following:
It doesn't seem as STD. If strep test resulted negative, then it's due to possible Candida infection due to using antibiotics for long term. It is not contagious, and can be easily treated with antifungal (e.g. miconazole oral gel, Nystatin or fluconazole).

Acid reflux was another diagnosis I suspected in your case regarding the inflamed throat. Treating acid reflux properly will reduce inflammation.

With regards to yellow teeth, there are 2 main explanations:
- smoking
- antibiotics such as tetracycline or doxycycline which are commonly used for acne.

Get further consultation with dentist for whitening options.

Hope it answered to your questions!

Yes I have used both tetracycline or doxycycline in the past. I was also put on accutane 3 times. I haven't been on any acne pills for the last year. Also my feet are yellow at the bottom, I also have toenail fungus. Do you think my liver could be damaged? What would cause my feet to be discolored? I attached a picture. My hands are find though.

I have been on my antibiotics for my throat for about 5 days and don't see much improvement. Could my throat be like this from liver damage?

Brief Answer:
No liver damage, see below....

Detailed Answer:
Hi back my dear,

1. Although you say your feet are yellow at bottom, their color seem normal to me.

2. Toenail fungus is difficult to treat and might need up to 1 year of regular antifungal treatment orally and locally.

3. None of them are showing liver damage. To make sure everything is OK with your liver, can ask to run: liver function test and abdominal ultrasound.

4. As I said earlier, and if throat is not getting better, then antibiotics won't help much. Get culture of throat swab for Candida and get treated again for acid reflux too.

Hope it answered to your questions.
