What Causes Severe Facial Pain And Numbness In Left-sided Face While Treating Sinus?

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jun 2016
Question: since August I have been on ABT 5 times. I had two sinus infections, two dental infections, and to start my lymph nodes swelled up last August, on my one underarm. I have over time developed a lot of facial pain. I thought it was at first my sinuses only because they hurt. My face now feels numb in several places on the left side of my face. The pain is like a pinched nerve pain. Often aching and other times a stinging pain. I had a lot of dental work done so I also thought it was related to that but now much of my left side is affected. I am going to see a ENT Dr. Monday. My dentist wants me to see a neurologist but we don't have one in 200 miles.

Brief Answer:
Probably trigeminal neuralgia, more information needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

It is necessary to describe more in detail symptoms on the face such as numbness distribution ( all your left side of face is numb, or only a part such check bone area, forehead area ), also the pain , for how long it lasts, ( seconds, or minutes )?
distribution of pain in comparison to numbness and pain intensity ( in a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 corresponds to light pain and 10 corresponds to most severe pain ).

It is the pain triggered by any activity such chewing for example?

I asked this information because I think symptoms you describe may be related to a condition called trigeminal neuralgia.

Awaiting for more information.........

I will try and answer your questions. I happened to look up on the internet yesterday and saw my pain and numbness seems to follow a nerve path. Below my left eye is numb, End of my nose is numb, across my check is numb, (in my sinus area. My jaw is numb and I am having a hard time chewing. I can only eat soft food and still can't complete a meal. Also talking a lot can get the pain going. It feels like a tight band around my mouth. I have to take pain meds before I eat or the pain is bad. I have a history problems with my jaw. the dentist worked on my teeth for two hours and my jaw still hurts. It is still cracking and popping when I eat. (I had three teeth pulled on my left side, jaw area, a week and a 1/2 ago but it is slow in healing.) It still feels like my jaw is asleep, like when the dentist gave me the shot to keep the pain of extraction down. The pain feels like nerve pain too. I have had back troubles for years and know what nerve pain feels like. ( I have a deteriorating disk in my back.) I would rate the pain as an 8 but as the numbness has seem to increased the pain has gone down. But once the pain starts kit last until I take something for pain. It does seem to have started to involve more nerve branches of the primary nerve in my face. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask. For pain I take 500mg of ASA and 200mg of IBU. I take them 4-5 times a day.

Sorry to bother you again but if I said the noise in my ears has stopped I am wrong. It back with a meanness. It is loud and my lower outer ear hurts (just above my earlobe). thinking is getting hard to do. My brain feel fuzzy today.

Brief Answer:
Carbamazepine use should help improve symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for the clarifications.

It is more obvious now that the condition responsible for your symptoms is probably trigeminal neuralgia, or compression of the fifth cranial nerve during its way.

The compression may take place from the arising of the nerve from the brainstem and in other places during its pathway.

Causes may be neurovascular conflict, intracranial mass, damage from dental work etc.

It is necessary for a brain MRI besides neurological examination in order to achieve a correct diagnosis.

The pain if diagnosis is confirmed, responds satisfactorily to Carbamazepine use. ( 3x200 mg/day for example).

The cause of ear noise should be clear after the ENT Doctor examination.

I suggest you to discuss with your Doctor about these issues.

Hope I helped you.

Greetings.
