Posted on Wed, 30 Nov 2016
Question: After recovering from costochronditis my voice sounds horse at times. Is that normal?
Can your ribs shift during this recovery. It happened on both sides. One side two times?
Also I had lower back pain during this time. I went to PT and now have a sore spot on my lower mid spine. I have radiating pain that goes across my back if I bend a certain way..I also started having some diarrhea toda?I do not have a fever or stomach pains. I have been taking Advil for 5 weeks.

Brief Answer:
Cause of your different symptoms and management

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxx, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. I will answer your questions one by one.

1) Costochondritis can cause hoarseness of voice by acid attack, stream inflammation, changing inspiration and expiration pattern to control pain and thus voice might become husky.

In recovery, it can cause intermittent hoarseness. But as you were also a case of breast cancer in past, you must rule out any

: neck nodes enlargement compressing over larynx
: Thyroid metastasis

You should consult ENT specialist for examination of neck, thyroid and larynx.
He will advise
- USG of neck
- Laryngoscopy

2) Shifting rib can be a symptom of costochondritis or it can cause "costochondritis". This is a syndrome known as "Slipping rib syndrome".
Do not worry about it if no pain.

If pain, continue treatment of costochondritis.

3) Back pain in mid spine region is less likely to be due to
- Disc or spondylosis

As it is hurting more on bending forward, it can be due to

- Muscular pain due to parapsinal muscle spasm

Usually pain of such type is dull, local tenderness, more on stretching of muscle or compression and no radiation to limbs or tingling sensation.

If your pain is such kind, you can follow few tips to get relief like

: Take rest
: Avoid compression at pain site
: Apply warm compresses at pain site
: Take painkillers which you were taking for costochondritis.

4) If diarrhoea only and no other symptoms, you can follow few steps to treat it

- Take more fluids like juices, water.
- Drink probiotic rich drinks like yoghurt
- Eat light food, less fatty, more carbohydrates. Do not stop eating.
- Also if it is not decreasing in frequency and you develop vomiting, better consult doctor. He might advise you

: Stool culture
: Intravenous fluid to treat dehydration

No need of any kind of antibiotics if no bleeding, no fever, diarrhoea is of less than 5 days duration.

Hope you will find all answers relevant. If still any doubt, do let me know.
Thanks. Take care.
