What Causes Red Blotchy Patch On Abdominal Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: About 20 yrs ago, just after I returned from Bali, I developed a red blotchy patch on my stomach. This has remained present ever since and now appears to be both enlarging (more splotches above, although smaller in nature), and deepening in color. I went to see a Derm who thought it could be a late on-set port wine stain caused by sun exposure, however, didn't know for sure. Any thoughts or potential remedies, as at a minimum, it's very unsighthly. XXXX From Canada

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to HCM.
I have read your query.
I understand your concern.
As per details, another differential that I would like to put un your case is a condition called Cherry angiomas. But before commenting in details about it , I would like to visualize the eruptions.
Also let me know whether the spots are asymptomatic or associated with any symptoms.
Kindly get back to me with the uploaded images and answer to my question.
Take care.

Hi Dr. Bansal,

I haven't been able to take a pic yet, however, I would be surprised if it were Cheery angiomas. What I have is completely asymptomatic. Unlike with Cherry angiomas, which as I understand, typically presents as smaller raised red circles, what I have is completely flat and is a splotchty pattern about ranging from 1 to 3inches wide and about 7 inches long, stretching from my belly button travelling upwards diagonally to my under arm. The redness gets more severe when exposed to the sun. (And their appears to be new splotchy marks forming that are approx. 2-3cm in size. I will hopefully get a picture to you on this shortly. Other than that, it is not itchy, sore or in any other way sympotmatic. Cheers, XXXX

kindly attach the photographs

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome back.
Yes you are absolutely right. Cherry angiomas present as red raised dots.
The way you described your rash may be a nevus or some allergic rash which aggravatea on sun exposure.
I would really appreciate if you can attach the photographs because in dermatology visualization is most important aspect to come to a diagnosis.
Thanks

This appears to be a type box only and won't allow me to attach a picture. Any suggestions (can't attach, can't cut and paste, etc).
