What Causes Persistent UTIs?

default
Posted on Fri, 26 Sep 2014
Question: I recently had 3 UTI's (confirmed at a quick care clinic with Urine test showing bacteria, etc). All 3 happened in last 7 weeks. My last course of antibiotics was finished 2 days ago - and the back pain that existed along with the bladder pain has increased quite a bit. I have nausea, but no fever. The back pain seems to be consistent dull pain -- that doesn't seem to go away no matter what I do. Driving over bumps hurts it more I noticed today. I am a 45 y/o female with hypothryroid, but otherwise very healthy. Never had UTI's in my past before this summer. Do I need to go into ER, or can I wait the several weeks it will take to get into a specialist?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to UTI with Urinary stone.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have repeated episodes of UTI with back ache over last 7 weeks .

Back ache with UTI strongly suggests presence of stone either in the kidney or ureter.

Please get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.
2)Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis.to rule out/confirm presence of stone.

In the mean while start taking broad spectrum antibiotics like Cefexine along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin twice daily and urine alkaliser thrice daily.Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine dilute

Consult qualified Urologist for evaluation and further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions ,
I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
