What Causes Pain In Left Side Of Ear And Pressure In Eye After Having Massage?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Hi,
I have this weird left side pain in the ear, mainly like pressure and left eye pain. I also have a muscle spasm on my upper left back which is effecting my neck and left side head. My doctor is not worried about the spasm and gave me exercises to take care of that. But she is worried about the left eye pain. She ruled out sinus. And recommended MRI or my head and gave me Tramadol for my pain yesterday. I took tramadol yesterday at 9pm, its 5:45pm today. I am feeling little weird on my right check as it is pulled from inside and my whole body is different. I don't know whats going on and I am freaked out. I do have some stress issues in the recent past. Please help.
I forgot to mention that I had Thai deep tissue massage yesterday and it was my first time. My face was really pressed hard against the massage pillow. I thought this information might be helpful. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Muscle spasm; Nerve compression in head & neck

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXX,

Thanks for your query.

Considering the history that you had a deep massage yesterday & your face was pressed hard against the pillow, the symptoms as mentioned in your post can be attributed to muscle spasm and compression of nerves in the head & neck region.

Since your treating doctor has ruled out sinus infection & you have not mentioned any past history of Hypertension, Diabetes, etc. in your post, the causation due to any systemic illness is also ruled out.
Kindly continue the medications and exercises as suggested by her.

In addition, you can also apply muscle relaxant gel, take nervigenic agents (like Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & multimineral supplements including iron, calcium & Vitamin D needs to be added in your diet.

If symptoms still persist, MRI of head & neck region can be done to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Please let me know if I need to clarify further.
Take care.

Hi Dr. Sannigrahi, thank you for reply.

I am still going through some weird things with my body.

Let me explain from beginning.

This all started few months back with a stiff neck and pain in my lower back of my head on the left side. My doctor gave me exercise steps. I followed them for sometime but didn't help me much. I ignored it and tried to live with the pain.

A month later I had to go to the hospital for an anxiety attack. The hospital checked everything related to my heart and said everything is normal. They gave me a pill and sent me home. Honestly I am going through some stressful time right now. This was one my doctors concerns too.

Now I am going through all new weird things. My whole left side of body is acting weird. I have sharp pain in my ear, there is no infection confirmed by my doctor. My left eyes and areas around the eye is painful. These pains sometimes shift to the right side but mostly on the left area. I am feeling more tired and I can feel I am weak in my arms and legs. The muscle spasm on my back is still hurting and I think that is causing the weakness in my left arm but I am more concerned about my head.

Please ask me anything I would let you know. I really want to get better soon and hopefully there is nothing life threatening with me right now. My MRI for brain is scheduled for September 12 and till then I am not sure how to deal with this.

Any help would be really appreciated. Just noticed that my left jaw is popping whereas my right jaw is all fine.

Thank you,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Kindly view the details

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Thanks for your follow up query and detailed history.

A. Since your symptoms have started few months back, they cannot be attributed directly to the massage session. A normal heart examination and ENT evaluation rules out cardiovascular and infective etiology for your symptoms.
Based on the above mentioned facts, the symptoms points towards a Neurological cause most probably nerve compression.
Symptomatic relief can be obtained with the help of muscle relaxants+ Nervigenic agents as mentioned in my previous answer, as well the exercises as suggested by your treating Doctor.

B. Your anxiety & stress is further aggravating the pain.
So, try to avoid stress. Maintain adequate hydration & nutrition status and take good sleep. Practice meditation.
A short course of anti-anxiety medicines can also be taken under the guidance of your Doctor.

C. If possible, try to get an early appointment for MRI.
You can also get an X ray of the head & neck region including cervical spine and consult a Neurologist for a complete Neurological examination.

There is no need to worry, you will be fine.
Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
