What Causes Pain And Tenderness On Face After A Sinuplasty?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: ok, had sinuplasty 3 weeks ago for chronic sinusitis. Have deviated septum too that wasnt going to be covered bi insurance so the procedure was done in office. The septum can wait. Within a few days was feeling poorly and turned out I now have an infection. Treatment prescribed was gentamicin 800mg dissolved in a distilled water nasal rinse 2 times a day. Still feel lousy ( no fever ) and they say it can be 2 weeks at least for this med to take effect. I've always had a cough and now its gotten much worse. I have been diagnosed with copd after years of smoking but have had 3 chest xrays, the most recent 4 months ago and each time they have been deemed clear. They were quite comprehensive xrays. I'm concerned about feeling like this and again, its all gotten worse after the sinus procedure. Any thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Mild increase in cough and secretion expected.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking your query on HCM.
I understand your concern.
It is normal for you to feel tired and fatigued after sinuplasty. There may be pain and tenderness of the face over the region of the sinuses. you would know that the the openings of the sinuses were dilated with a balloon during the procedure of sinuplasty, facilitating drainage of the sinus secretions into the back of the nose (Nasopharynx). There would normally have more discharge and a cough. Since you have COPD, your usual cough and sputum would be increased due the added secretion from the sinuses. The secretion may be blood tinged for up to a week.
If you have thick sputum which is more colored than normal or if you develop fever with worsening of breathlessness, there may be an infection. This may produce an exacerbation of the COPD and you may require an oral antibiotic and other medicines.
If symptoms do not improve in a few days or they continue to increase or you have a fever, eye pain or eye swelling or headache, you should see your doctor.

If you have further query, I am available.
Wish you a quick recovery.

The cough comes and go's. It's productive at times and others it's very tight. Sputum is always white or fairly clear. The blood from the sinus procedure has dissipated since I've been irrigatting over 2 weeks. One thing that bothers me is how can chest xrays be clear everytime if I supposedly have copd? When my chest is listened to its always clear with no wheezing.

oh, and by the way, I had the procedure over 3 weeks ago and they tell me it takes at least 2 weeks for the antibiotic they prescribed to work so I already do have an infection. Hard to believe it takes that long and a person has to walk around with an infection from surgery for weeks

Brief Answer:
COPD is not diagnosed from Xray

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.
Sorry for the delay in replying.
COPD is not diagnosed based on the chest xray. It is diagnosed on the basis of Lung Function Test ( Spirometry).Without significant infection the xray would be clear and show only signs of hyperinflation/increased broncho vascular markings.
If you have had a spirometry, send me the report or the readings and I will be able to tell you whether you have COPD or not.
If the sputum is clear, it means you do not have any significant infection and you do not require additional oral antibiotic.
Don't worry, this will pass soon.

I shall be happy to interpret your Spirometry results if you have any.
Regards,
