What Causes Numbness In Toes And Rash On Foot?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jul 2015
Question: Hello. 33 year old female .. in good health as far as I know. About a month ago I noticed numbness in the top of my right foot and 3rd-5th digit. I considered it weird and just thought I would ask my doc about it if it didn't improve. About a week ago I started to develop a rash on the ankle on the same foot. Ive tried cortisone unscented soap and lotion and it continues to worsen. When I got home today I noticed the rash on my ankle on the left leg now and swelling in both legs. Concerned with what this could be. Please help.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to many causes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The presence of a rash with swelling on both the feet can be due to allergy, dermatitis, cellulitis, congestive heart failure, kidney disease, arthritis, high altitude, high salt intake and any blood clot in the veins causing DVT. Are you taking some medicines like laxatives? Abusing these can also cause bilateral pedal edema.

Numbness can be due to nerve damage, low vitamin B 12 levels, thyroid disease or vascular deformity. You have to get a NCV( nerve conduction velocity) test done to assess the damage to the nerves. Till that time, wear flat slippers and take some vitamin B12 which is helpful in nerve injuries. I suggest you an immediate physician consultation. You need to get blood tests, kidney function tests, electrolyte levels, ECG and stress ECHO, venous Doppler of the legs, Vitamin B 12 levels, NCV (nerve conduction velocity) and urine tests done.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you. My profession doesn't allow for much time off and I'm not sure how soon I could get in to see a dr. I have insurance it's just a time issue. Do I need to treat this urgently? It may be a month before I'm able to get into the dr. Also I don't abuse laxatives. I take a daily vitamin and b 12 already. I fractured my spine about 6 years ago while falling from a backflip. it's possible this area didn't heal correctly causing nerve damage but I just guessing at this point. Basically, am I doing more harm if it takes a month to get into my Drs office?

Brief Answer:
Keeping the legs elevated on pillows will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If there is no pain in the legs with swelling then you can wait for a month. Do keep both the feet elevated on two pillows while resting for the swelling to reduce.
Hope my answer is helpful.
