What Causes Nose Bleeds?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Sep 2017
Question: my daughter is 4.5 years old. When I picked her up from school today she said she had a headache, and that she got a bloody nose at school. But after that was playing just fine. About an hour after dinner this evening, as she was playing she suddenly stopped, doubled over in pain (grabbing her head) crying that her forehead hurt, then she promptly threw up. As I was cleaning her up, I noticed that she also had a bloody nose. I've since given her medicine (children's tylenol) and she has not thrown-up anymore, but she is still saying that her head hurts. My first thought was dehydration, though i know her school does a good job with water breaks and she drank plenty of milk with dinner. I guess i'm mostly concerned about the headache...

Brief Answer:
Please get her evaluated by a pediatrician

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

Headache with nasal bleed in this age can be due to various causes.
Conditions like dehydration(causes drying up of nasal mucosa and precipitates bleed), low hemoglobin, infection of SINUS, trauma or increase blood pressure may present with headache with nasal bleed. Increase pressure in brain (unlikely in your case) may also present with this symptom.
As you are saying that she is taking fluids properly and there are no other signs, I don't think dehydration as a cause here.
I would like to know if there is any history of trauma/head injury.
If it is due to hypertension (not very uncommon in this age) then it needs to be managed quickly.
I request you to take her to a pediatrician for proper clinical examination including BP measurement to rule out any significant cause of headache.
I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Wishing for good health of your child.
Regards
